Choose a gravel race bike when speed, events and aggressive road-bike handling lead the decision. Choose a gravel explore bike when comfort, larger tyres, storage, mounting points and carrying capacity matter more. Choose a mountain bike when the terrain involves technical singletrack, jumps or repeated hard impacts.

Start with purpose

What is a gravel bike?

A gravel bike sits between a road bike and a mountain bike. It retains much of the efficiency and road speed of a drop-bar bike while adding tyre volume, stability and confidence on loose or broken surfaces.

That can make it suitable for gravel roads, fire trails, commuting, bikepacking, country roads, caravan travel and long mixed-surface rides. It does not make every gravel bike equally suitable for every one of those jobs.

Why gravel gearing feels different

Many current cross-country mountain bikes use a single front chainring around 32 teeth with a very wide cassette. That is excellent for steep off-road climbing but can limit comfortable top-end speed on sealed roads.

Gravel often uses a larger front chainring—commonly around 40 to 44 teeth in a single-ring system—or a two-ring system on bikes intended to retain closer road-style gear steps.

Can you ride with a road bunch?

Yes, but very wide gravel cassettes can create larger jumps between gears. One ratio may feel too easy and the next slightly too hard when the bunch changes pace. A two-ring gravel setup can provide closer steps for riders who spend more time on sealed roads.

The tyre becomes part of the suspension

Most gravel bikes do not use a conventional suspension fork. A large, supple tyre at the correct pressure absorbs chatter and allows the casing to conform to the ground rather than bouncing across it.

Tubeless is particularly appropriate because it permits lower pressures with less risk of a pinch flat. The goal is not simply to fit the heaviest or widest tyre possible. It is to create the correct volume, casing and pressure for the rider and terrain.

Choosing a frame material

Carbon is common because engineers can tune stiffness, weight and vibration management. Aluminium remains a strong value choice. Steel can create a robust, long-term exploration platform, while titanium suits riders seeking longevity and a premium all-round frame.

Carbon is appropriate—but impacts still matter

Carbon can be repaired when the damaged area is identified. After a significant impact, do not assume a clean surface proves the structure is unaffected.

Common questions

Gravel bike FAQs.

Is a gravel bike just a road bike with bigger tyres?
A gravel race bike may be close to that idea, but an explore bike can use more stable geometry, far more storage and mounting points, larger tyre capacity and comfort systems that create a very different bike.
Can a gravel bike replace a mountain bike?
Only for non-technical riding. Gravel is excellent on rough roads and fire trails. Technical singletrack, jumps and repeated hard impacts require the suspension and control of a mountain bike.
Is the SuperX limited to 40 mm tyres?
No. The SuperX LAB71 shown is supplied with 40 mm tyres, but the current platform accepts up to 48 mm at the frame and 51 mm at the fork, measured with the required surrounding clearance.
Why does the Topstone have a pivot near the seat tube?
It is the KingPin system. The pivot permits controlled vertical flex through the rear triangle and seatpost, creating up to 30 mm of bump-smoothing movement without a conventional rear shock.
Do I need a test ride before buying?
Not always. A clear discussion about intended use, experienced geometry assessment and a basic in-store fit-up can establish whether the platform and size are right before an outdoor ride is considered.
